Sharon R. Morgan

Sharon has more than 21 years of expertise representing people who have been seriously and permanently injured due to mistakes made by healthcare providers, hospitals, and nursing homes.

She concentrates her practice on complex medical and surgical negligence cases, and in particular those involving infants who suffer devastating brain injuries and cerebral palsy when healthcare providers fail to deliver them timely despite signs of fetal intolerance to labor, distress and inadequate oxygenation.

Prior to her law career, Ms. Morgan served for 21 years in the United States Navy and retired as a Chief Hospital Corpsman. Ms. Morgan is honored to have served in the Persian Gulf War on board the Hospital Ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20), and to have also deployed for several months on that ship in support of military and humanitarian missions to the island of Haiti. As a Chief Petty Officer she had the distinction of being appointed to positions typically held by higher ranking officers, and served for 2 years as the Legal Officer for the U.S. Naval Hospital in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and for 2 years as the Patient Administration and Decedent Affairs Officer for the Naval Hospital Jacksonville, Fl. Throughout her military service Ms. Morgan worked in and supervised staff in a variety of clinical areas including Labor & Delivery, Emergency Room, Mass Casualty Triage and surgical units. She was awarded numerous Navy Achievement and Navy Commendation Medals for superior performance in operational settings.

Ms. Morgan’s extensive medical knowledge, familiarity with hospital administration, and her unique military background combine to enhance her law practice. Her training, education and experience in medicine combined with her vast legal knowledge allow her to efficiently and accurately analyze the facts of each case, and to meticulously narrow her focus on the issues that give each of her cases the best possible chance for successful resolution. Ms. Morgan’s proficiency, expertise and ability to effectively manage complex medical negligence cases have resulted in several noteworthy achievements including:

$15 Million Verdict – for an emergency room physician failing to appropriately recognize an abnormal laboratory result that showed bacteria in the bloodstream of a five-month-old infant, which went untreated with antibiotics and subsequently progressed into bacterial meningitis causing sever brain damage, deafness, developmental delays and motor deficits.

$13 Million settlement in a FTCA claim against a United States Military Hospital- for failing to diagnose and properly treat a 3-month-old infant’s bowel obstruction causing her to suffer a catastrophic brain injury resulting in cerebral palsy and profound developmental, cognitive and motor deficits.

$12 Million settlement – for failing to offer a cerclage (a suture intended to hold a shortening cervix closed thereby allowing a pregnancy to continue), resulting in the very premature birth of twins at 24 weeks, resulting in their suffering profound developmental delays, cerebral palsy, and motor dysfunction.

$10 Million settlement – for failing to timely diagnose and treat an infection before it deteriorated into sepsis resulting in life threatening injuries and amputations.

$10 Million settlement – for failing to respond to a progressively worsening fetal monitor tracing and delayed delivery of a newborn causing severe brain injury from lack of oxygen resulting in cerebral palsy, profound developmental, cognitive and motor deficits.

$9.5 Million settlement – for failing to perform a cesarean section delivery despite hours of persistent and repetitive fetal heart rate decelerations indicative of a fetus who in not getting enough oxygen, resulting in catastrophic brain damage, including severe cerebral palsy, cognitive impairment and motor deficits.

$7.75 Million settlement – for failing to timely intervene to a sudden and prolonged fetal bradycardia that persisted for more than 20 minutes where the baby’s heart rate was in the 90s, causing an otherwise healthy baby to be born with a severe hypoxic-ischemic brain encephalopathy that resulted in permanent brain injury, developmental delays, motor impairments and cognitive deficits.

$6 Million – for failing to recognize obvious symptoms of uterine rupture in someone with a prior cesarean delivery (VBAC), when there was still time to deliver the baby before it suffered a complete loss of oxygen, causing permanent brain injury resulting in cerebral palsy.

$5 Million – for failing to timely diagnose a spinal mass before it completely compressed the spinal cord resulting in permanent paraplegia.

$5 Million – for failing to timely recognize and restore respirations in a patient under anesthesia before cardiac arrest and severe brain damaged occurred due to lack of oxygen, leaving the patient in a permanent and persistent vegetative state.

Ms. Morgan is admitted to practice in the State Courts of Maryland and the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, and the United States Supreme Court. She has been specially admitted to practice law for individual cases in State Courts of Alabama, District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin. She has also been specially admitted to practice law for individual cases in the Federal Courts of Hawaii and Minnesota.

Ms. Morgan is an active member of the Maryland Association for Justice and has served on their Board of Governors from  2014 – 2022 and co-chaired the Medical Negligence Section from 2014-2017. She is also a member of the American Association for Justice and the Maryland State Bar Association.
