Woman Dies During Childbirth After Suffering Excessive Bleeding

A family was struck by an unexpected tragedy last month when a 37-year-old woman died during childbirth after she arrived at a hospital while going into labor. According to a local news report, the woman had been experiencing heavy bleeding shortly before her death, which was likely the cause. The child survived the labor and is reportedly healthy, although an internal investigation is being performed.

When a pregnant woman is going into labor or experiencing complications with her pregnancy and seeks medical help, doctors and hospitals have unique medical and legal responsibilities to care for both the mother and the child. The responsibility may vary depending on the specific circumstances of each case, but medical providers are generally required to provide care that meets or exceeds the professional standard of care to which a patient in similar circumstances is entitled.

Although the rate of deaths suffered by mothers in childbirth has decreased greatly in the developed world over the last 150 years, mistakes still occur and patients lose their lives. Doctors have a primary responsibility to ensure that the health and safety of the mother are protected, although a woman’s death in childbirth may not always present an appropriate Maryland medical malpractice claim.

Maryland Birth Injury Lawsuits for Harm to the Mother

Many Maryland birth injury lawsuits are filed based on substandard care that results in physical or neurological harm to a baby. However, it is also possible to successfully pursue a Maryland medical malpractice claim for injuries that are negligently inflicted on a mother during labor or during another medical visit. In fact, medical providers can make mistakes and may provide substandard care that results in debilitating physical, sexual, and psychological harm to a woman who was entitled to receive care that was up to the appropriate standard. Victims of medical malpractice can discuss their case with a skilled Maryland medical malpractice attorney and may be entitled to damages for medical bills, physical and emotional pain, disfigurement, infertility, and other losses related to the malpractice.
