Recent Article Hones in on Birth Statistics at Military Hospitals; Results Are Not Good

One of the benefits of joining and serving in the military is the medical care that is provided to service members and their families at little to no cost. However, there may be hidden costs associated with giving birth at a military hospital, according to a recent report by the New York Times.

Specifically, the article mentions preventable birth defects and birth injuries. Evidently, the 50,000 babies born in military hospitals each year have twice the chance of being injured during birth than those babies born at civilian hospitals. On top of that, the mothers of the newborn babies are also more likely to hemorrhage as a result of giving birth when the birth occurs at a military hospital.

In fact, according to the article, one half of the military hospitals monitored during the survey had more than the expected rate of birth injuries during 2012. Of those, four have repeatedly been on that list.

The article explains that many of the birth injuries occur due to improperly performed surgical procedures. Oftentimes, such mistakes are preventable when the proper care is taken.

Birth Injuries in the Maryland Area
Hospitals, whether privately owned or run by the United State military, have a duty to their patients to perform all procedures at or above a certain level. This includes taking precautions to avoid birth defects, birth injuries, as well as injuries to the mother during child birth.

On occasion, however, a physician or a nurse makes a grave mistake that leads to a serious or fatal error. When this occurs, the victim of that mistake–or their family if the accident resulted in the victim’s death–is entitled to bring a lawsuit against the parties responsible for their injuries or loss.

This type of lawsuit, which is based in negligence, requires that the plaintiff prove that the level of care provided by the hospital was not up to par with the professional standards at the time of the accident. A dedicated Maryland birth injury attorney is a good resource for those considering bringing a birth injury case in the State of Maryland.
