Baltimore Maternal Birth Injury Lawyer

Childbirth is one of life’s most amazing experiences. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most frightening. Most mothers expect some degree of pain during childbirth, but there are some injuries women incur that they never expected. Some of these injuries are temporary and will resolve on their own. Others though, may stay with the woman for years to come and they could even impact a person’s daily functions.

When a childbirth injury causes significant harm, the injured individual may have the right to file a medical malpractice claim. A Baltimore maternal birth injury lawyer can advise on the facts of the case to give injured individuals the best chance of a positive outcome.

Vaginal Tearing

Some degree of tearing is normal during childbirth, particularly when a woman is birthing her first child. Most tearing is not of great concern and will remedy itself over a short period of time. Significant tearing though, can result in painful sexual intercourse and urinary and fecal incontinence. This type of tearing often requires surgical correction. When a woman is at risk of significant tears, such as when the child has a very high birth weight, doctors should identify the cause for concern and take action, such as performing an emergency C-section.

Broken Bones

Newborns are at risk of suffering broken bones during childbirth, but women are, as well. One of the most common types of broken bones suffered by women during childbirth is a separated pubic symphysis. This is the section of cartilage where right and left bones of the pelvic girdle connect. When these separate, it causes a gap that is very painful and that can take up to eight months to heal. A woman’s coccyx, which is a triangular section at the end of the spinal column, can also become broken during childbirth.

Uterine Ruptures

Uterine ruptures can occur before or during childbirth. Women who have had a C-section previously are most at risk, as the rupture occurs when the pressure from the baby is placed on a scar from a previous surgery, tearing the uterus. The child, the placenta, or both may then enter the mother’s abdominal cavity. This is a very serious injury that can cause hemorrhaging and wrongful death.

Uterine Inversion

Uterine inversion occurs when the placenta remains attached to the uterine wall when it is delivered. The uterus is then pulled out of the woman’s body and essentially turns inside out. Fortunately, the condition is treatable but doctors must act quickly, as the risk of death is very high with this type of injury.
